AI chatbot for your website in India: widget, WhatsApp, or both?

A website chatbot and a WhatsApp bot solve different problems. What each one does, what drives the cost, and why the handover matters most.

Website assistantsWebsites

For most small businesses in India the answer is both, connected: a chatbot on the website to answer the question a visitor has right now, and WhatsApp for the conversation after that, with the chat handed over so the customer never has to repeat themselves. A website chatbot on its own tends to collect enquiries that nobody follows up. A WhatsApp bot on its own only reaches people who already have your number.

What is the difference between a website chatbot and a WhatsApp bot?

They sit at different points in the same decision.

A website chatbot meets somebody who is still deciding. They found you through search or a link, they are reading your services page, and they have one question: do you cover my area, are you open on Sunday, roughly what does this involve. If nobody answers, they go back to the results and try the next business.

A WhatsApp bot meets somebody who has already decided to contact you. They got your number from your Google profile, a card or a friend. It is good at sorting the routine messages that arrive in volume, like timings, directions or order status, and at replying when nobody is free to.

The common mistake is buying one and expecting it to do the other one's job.

Do I need a chatbot on my website at all?

Not always, and it is worth saying that first because a vendor will not.

You probably do not need one if most of your customers phone rather than browse (that is a job for a voice agent that answers the calls instead), if your business turns on a quote only you can give (a bot that guesses at it costs more than the enquiry was worth), or if your site gets few enough visitors that you can answer every message yourself within the hour.

You probably do if visitors arrive outside working hours, if the same half dozen questions come in every week, or if your customers compare three businesses before contacting any of them. In that last case the business that answers first is usually the one that gets the call.

Why is the handover to WhatsApp the part that matters?

A website chatbot has one job: remove the question standing between a visitor and contacting you, then get out of the way. The failure everyone already expects from a chatbot is the one that will not let go. It loops, it deflects, it asks for an email address, and then nothing happens.

In India the natural place for the conversation to continue is WhatsApp, because that is where the customer already is and where you already reply. So a good setup ends the website chat by moving it to your WhatsApp with the context attached: who they are, what they asked and what the bot told them. You start the conversation already knowing what they want.

When comparing tools, ask to see this step working. Plenty of website chatbots "integrate with WhatsApp" only in the sense that they send you a notification. That is an alert, not a handover.

What does an AI chatbot for a website cost in India?

The useful answer is a list of what moves the number, because a single figure would cover everything from a ten-question bot to one wired into your stock and calendar.

  • What it has to know. A bot answering from your ten most common questions is a small job. One that reads your price list, stock or appointment calendar is a different product, with connections that have to be built and kept working.
  • Which languages. English only, English and Hindi, or Hinglish typed in English letters, which is how a lot of customers actually write. Each has to be tested with real questions, not just switched on.
  • The WhatsApp side. The WhatsApp Business app is free, but it is one phone and one person. Connecting a bot to WhatsApp goes through the WhatsApp Business Platform. There, replies to a customer who messaged you in the last 24 hours are free, and the messages a business starts (confirmations, reminders, offers) are charged one by one, at rates that depend on the kind of message and the recipient's country. So the running cost grows with how often you message first, and it is worth asking whether a quote includes Meta's charges or passes them on.
  • The model behind it. Each AI reply costs a small amount. At the volumes most small businesses see this is rarely the big number, but a quote should still say who pays it.
  • Who keeps it current. Hours change, prices change, a new service launches. A bot nobody updates starts giving wrong answers with total confidence, which is worse than having no bot.

What should a small business ask before buying one?

  1. What does it say when it does not know? It should say so and hand over. Ask for a demo using a question it cannot answer.
  2. Can I see the handover to WhatsApp, with the conversation attached?
  3. Does it answer in Hindi, and in Hinglish typed in English letters?
  4. Can I read every conversation, and will somebody summarise what visitors asked each month?
  5. Who updates it when my prices or hours change?

The fourth question is the one people skip. The questions visitors type at midnight are the objections your website is not answering, and that list is a content brief written by your own buyers.

Where this studio stands

We build the kind of assistant described here: trained on one business, answering in English or Hindi, and handing over to WhatsApp with the context attached. The website assistant page says where it does not belong as well as where it does.
